We are a community-based, non-profit organization administered by a volunteer board of directors representative of the communities within the Greenstone Service area.

Local Initiative Contribution

Does Your Organization Qualify?

A Local Initiative Contribution, also known as an LIC, is a form of funding provided by GEDC to Non-Profit organizations for eligible activities that support community economic development objectives. The maximum eligible contribution is $5,000. First Nations, Municipalities, or other non-profit community organizations located in the Greenstone Economic Development Corporation service area are eligible to apply for an LIC.  There is a focus on projects that have economic benefits for the Greenstone Region.

Eligible Activities:     

Economic development activities that support GEDC’s Strategic objectives, such as working with communities to assess local problems, establish objectives, plan and implement strategies to develop human, institutional and physical infrastructures, entrepreneurship, employment and the economy   

The project types of projects can fit into the following categories.    

Community Economic Development: 

  • environmental assessment reports;
  • strategic and business planning;
  • sector or industry analysis;
  • supporting pre-feasibility, research, marketing and engineering studies;
  • economic recovery plans;
  • workforce attraction and retention strategies;
  • community investment readiness plans;
  • small scale capital projects;
  • inventories of community assets and community profiles; and,
  • the implementation of priority initiatives identified in community or regional economic development plans that demonstrate economic results.

Business Growth and Competitiveness:

  • business management capacity projects, including planning, training, research and access to business management expertise and export readiness;
  • activities that lead to increased trade expansion, including export development and investment attraction;
  • seminars/workshops;
  • marketing/promotional activities; and,
  • community tourism events.

Innovation:

  • activities that promote innovation and new technology.
  • e-commerce promotion
  • development of on-line business services
  • community Information and Communications Technology (ICT) strategies and projects

 and other projects that have direct economic impact.   

Ineligible Activities:

Ongoing Activities carried out directly by the Applicant; activities that lead to profit generation; projects that create financial dependencies FedNor/Industry Canada contributions; activities that support social goals, including education and health care services and delivery; and, activities primarily of a social/recreational nature such as museums, libraries, cultural centres, recreation centres, tourist information/welcome centres, arenas and waste management disposal.
